Meaning of Success

Life journey vis-à-vis Success

The word “Success” is quite overrated! Don't you agree?

If you inquire 100 people about the meaning of this word, you will find 100 different explanations. Majorly "success" is tallied from other’s stances and barely from introspection. There is a mammoth quantity of books and articles written to establish success but not a single definition asserts it all.

The day we were born alongside entered innumerable parameters interpreting our life journey in terms of being successful. I wonder... whether this so-called “success” is a sheer challenge for beings to perform generously and get sacrificed in worldly affairs, or does this have any tangible effect on finding actual meaning to life?

Does success need to be enormous and compels an acknowledgment from others or do private accomplishments and self-peace record success? Because for me, if I get up early in the dawn and… although no one claps or put a medal on me… it is a successful day for me.

I was lately having a conversation with Kargil Warrior, Captain Satendra Sangwan (Retd), and he illustrated his concept on the topic. As per him, “...if you have big dreams then you have to make bigger efforts and also have to be mentally prepared to bear greater pains because everyone admires the final result of the efforts but you were successful the day you put up with that first step...”( more about Cap Satendra Sangwan (Retd) & Cap S Sangwan)

No matter how we define success, we can agree upon the fact that an understanding of success can be extraordinarily empowering. Knowing that you’re successful enriches your perception of life. To be more precise: your perception of the importance of the role you play in life. This may not be acknowledged by others but if you appreciate your role, you are successful.

My connotation of success is outlined by these four quotes. Hope these shall amplify your deliberation parameters while weighing your own life on the term of success-

Strive not to be a success but rather to be of value.” – Albert Einstein

My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment” – Oprah Winfrey

Success? I don’t know what that word means. I’m happy. But success goes back to what in somebody’s eyes success means. For me, success is inner peace. That’s a good day for me.”- Denzel Washington

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”- Mark Twain

  2. I just can’t agree more.

However, I don’t have data to prove this point but I my opinion, the definition of success is also changes with age/ life stages.
All those people who say success means happiness/ inner peace/ satisfaction, must have had a different definition when they were busy making their business, getting awards, enjoying recognition, managing social status etc.
Once they achieved all these, they change the definition of success.
The world we live in we need affirmations and validation. We try to prove until we get it.
Can’t we just be happy without any targets or achievements.
We can’t. Because we are scared of judgements.

  3. French Philosopher Voltaire, who influenced many others in areas political philosophy and literature like Rousseau and Christopher Hitchens wrote Candide wherein he explored human condition and is said to be enraged at human cruelty and idiocy. He scorns the Panglossian pride, which pretends to justify the unjustifiable with blithe self-assurance and vain sophistries. He despises any theory clever enough to explain away human suffering, but not humane enough to decry it.

But this is because he believes human beings can be better. For Voltaire, we can and should challenge all fair-sounding ideologies reconciling us to indignities visited on others we would not accept for ourselves.
It would appear that success could be multi dimensional

  4. Dear Ekta,
Thanks once again for a very thought provoking blog in the most spoken and talked about word in the world- Success.

It's true that everyone Will have a different meaning and definition of the word depending upon Time , Age, Circumstances. And it's all relative. For example the day I ran my first 21 Km half marathon I treated that a Success to be in company of all finishers having sweat soaked salted faces. But for trained Ultra runners, 21 Km is just warm up session and a child's play.

A rickshaw puller outside a railway station feels successful if after waiting for 3 hours for his turn gets a customer who would be travelling to far off destination so that he earns more meterage as compared to the other one who got a customer who would just travel half a kilometre and give 5 Rupees and had lost his turn out at railway station.

A student feels successful if he gets more than expected marks.

So this is my take that

Pls define your SUCCESS MANTRA and make honest efforts to achieve it and u will have a smile on your face.
