Silence- A search

Disclaimer- “Personal” silence is "speaking" here.

Intemperate devilish acts, inordinate goodness, unbridled loudness, unrestricted information- I occasionally feel confused in the kind of world which is constantly loud… creating rude families and plastic relationship. Be it personal or professional, the kalyug seems to have entered the soul of being.

The silent-way-of-life is a new path that I have been exploring post-2018 with many ups & downs. This practice of silence…. is kind of hard for a person like me... but there is no doubt it has defined an exciting road for me. I feel more near and true to myself.

In my view, silence has two faces- Good and Bad.

1. Silence is good. Sometimes when the situation presents me with some unreasonable person, or relationship, or condition wherein, my conscience points out that any amount of effort shall go in vain, I keep mum. I prefer to save my energy, emotions, and time.

2. Silence is bad. Sometimes when my inner being points me that keeping quiet may aggravate the wrongfulness and that action is indispensable to negate the repercussions in the future, I speak or rather scream "behaviorally"

The uncontrolled speaking led Krishna to release his Sudarshana Chakra on Shishupala. The excessive suppression of learned adults in court humiliated Draupadi, which culminated in the epic battle, the Mahabharata.

What I learned till now is - To maintain the balance of speech and silence is the key to the redirection of history… life journey… and ultimately our soul.

------
"The Pause; that impressive silence, that eloquent silence, that geometrically progressive silence which often achieves a desired effect where no combination of words, however so felicitous, could accomplish it." -Mark Twain
The words are precious and powerful and irrevocable.
They reflect hurt. They present hope. They mend souls. They break beings. Handling words is of utmost importance.

However, Silence help in word-moderation. A silence can make a relationship (or break it!!).

Silence has energy. Excessive thoughts prevent us from reality. Silence puts a brake on the mind and slows racing thoughts. While in silence there is time for introspection, self-discovery, and self-improvement and it allows our true self to speak.

Silence boosts creativity to handle any situation. The state of silence is a way of reaching another part of our mind.
Silence is as the austerity of the mind, instead of austerity of speech (Bhagwat Gita)
I have not found any tailor-made formula to attain the silent-state-of-mind.
I find silence when reading a book or listening to Taylor Swift music or simply being silent 😇. Maybe one finds silence while cooking or looking at the sky or chatting with friends.

The exploration on Silence is still on. I still don't know (for sure) whether Silence is good or bad but one thing I am positive of is- it is a mode to enlighten inner energy.

Here is a bundle of  quotes to ponder upon-

First one from Jack Kerouac, an American Novelist-
“Listen closely... the eternal hush of silence goes on and on throughout all this, and has been going on, and will go on and on. This is because the world is nothing but a dream and is just thought of and the everlasting eternity pays no attention to it.”
And second from Wayne W.Dyer, a spiritual author-
"Make peace with silence, and remind yourself that it is in this space that you'll come to remember your spirit. When you're able to transcend an aversion to silence, you'll also transcend many other miseries. And it is in this silence that the remembrance of God will be activated.”

  1. Thanks for sharing. My thought in the matter; Silence is signal from mind that things are under full observation and focused analysis( work in progress). wherein Silence is bad , when action is needed after your observation and focused analysis and action is not coming.

  2. Ekta thanks for a very thought provoking blog on silence.

As my mind says, silence and speech both are complementary to each other. speech does not have any meaning until unless we have silence.
Like in the text if you observe keenly if there is no space between the alphabets, letters and sentences, the entire text becomes meaningless.
To give meaning to the written text spaces are required this is exactly the role of silence in our life.

So to my mind we can't define silence as good or bad.
In another perspective when we move away from worldly things or say the world itself we find silence everywhere beyond atmosphere it's all silence, the space the Cosmos it's all silent and the same goes with the feeling when we get deeper into our self and find that as deep we go within our mind it's once again the silence.

However in day to day life even remaining silent as per situation also can be considered as practicing silence over speech which gives you instant feeling of joy that things are under control and can always be improved by slight behavioural change.

P.s : I shall explore music of Taylor Swift. Never heard that.

  5. Loved the line....silence in cooking, as for me cooking is stress buster whereas I have met people those take it as burden or duty. For me silence is all about balance between your thought. If u r able to sort out your inner self and the outher world, u will know when to open your mouth and when to stay quiet.

  6. In praise of silence-"The true genius shudders at incompleteness imperfection and usually prefers silence to saying the something which is not everything that
should be said.” – Edgar Allan Poe
Personally I wish everyone to be blessed and be attentive to all eloquent silences wherever they occur.
